UPDATE FROM THE CHAIR
As we come to the end of 2016 it is time to reflect on some of the achievements that have been made by your committee. It is also an opportunity to reflect on some of the things which have not gone so well for us over the year.
As a committee we have been busy on several exciting projects which allow us to raise the profile of head and neck cancer nursing within the wider health economy. BAHNON is a registered stakeholder with NICE in regard to the consultation on Head and Neck Quality Standards. One of our committee members has also been extensively involved in the publication of the latest NICE guidance for Upper Aerodigestive Tract Cancers. We continue to influence the nursing aspectsof the new national audit tool HANAby sitting on the steering groupand we should see this going live next year. We have also contributed a chapter to the new ENT-UK guidelines which were published earlier this year.
We also continue to be active within the Cancer Nursing Partnership group and Head and Neck cancer was featured in one of their newsletters this year. We also continue to work with UKONS and our vice-chair currently sits on both the radiotherapy and skin care groups.
We continue to work closely with our consultant and AHP colleagues and represent the interests of nursing within BAHNO. A joint conference was held with BAHNO this year with parallel sessions for nurses and AHP’s proving popular.
Our members have been involved in a research project with a SLT colleague and we look forward to sharing the results of her study with you when published.
We have welcomed some new members to the committee this year. Jo Greedy and Ian Salmon have recently joined us and we are looking forward to working with them in the future.
We realise that there have been difficulties in failing to live up to our promise to re-vamp our website. We would like to apologise to our members for the delay in getting this up and running. Please bear with us and you will see the new website fully functioning soon. In order to make the website a robust resource we do need your help, so please email us with any new policies or procedures you are willing to share with the Head and Neck Community.
Moving forward into 2017.
Looking through some documents recently we discovered that the very first meeting of the steering committee for BAHNON was in April 1997. This means that 2017 will be our 20 year anniversary. As we plan our conference for next year we will have this in mind. For those of us who joined in 1997 we have seen many changes to our patient population and to the treatments they undertake, with the theme of our conference we hope to learn more about the changes we will see happening over the next 20 years. The theme for the conference will be Innovations in Head & Neck Cancer. It will take place on 9th June at the MacDonald Burlington Hotel, Birmingham so please save the date.
As well as looking forward to our conference we are also looking forward to re-launching our newsletter in e-format, whilst we continue to work on our website, so look out for more on this during 2017.
We will continue to work with our members to raise the profile of Head and Neck cancer care and look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in Birmingham
