Salivary Gland Cancer Research Working group
Following the closure of the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI), this working group was tasked ‘to identify the gaps in Salivary Gland Cancer Research and develop strategic priorities for this area of research’.
In March 2024 the group met, brainstormed, shared their work and interests and, identified a list of research questions (RQ).
Following a subsequent prioritisation exercise, four workstreams were launched representing the top four priorities.
Current workstreams
RQ1 Address the utility of Guidelines for Salivary Gland Cancer (SGC) https://www.salivaryglandcancer.uk/uk-salivary-gland-cancer-research-working-group-uksgcrwg/rq-1-address-the-utility-of-guidelines-for-salivary-gland-cancers-sgc/
RQ2. Assess the variation in histopathology reporting for Salivary Gland Cancers (SGC) https://www.salivaryglandcancer.uk/uk-salivary-gland-cancer-research-working-group-uksgcrwg/rq-2-assess-the-variation-in-histopathology-reporting-for-salivary-gland-cancers-sgc/
RQ3 Standardise the decision making processes for patients who have technically operable, Salivary Gland Cancer (SGC), where the surgery carried high morbidity https://www.salivaryglandcancer.uk/uk-salivary-gland-cancer-research-working-group-uksgcrwg/rq-3-standardise-the-decision-making-processes-for-patients-who-have-technically-operable-salivary-gland-cancer-sgc-where-the-surgery-carries-high-morbidity/
RQ4. Improve the diagnostic pathway for Salivary Gland Cancer (SGC) patients https://www.salivaryglandcancer.uk/uk-salivary-gland-cancer-research-working-group-uksgcrwg/rq-4-improve-the-diagnostic-pathway-for-salivary-gland-cancer-sgc-patients/
Please note that the top four priorities are on a ‘rolling’ basis i.e we have identified a longer list of RQ’s and when possible, will move priorities up that list. Therefore, if you are interested in joining the UK Salivary Gland Research Working Group but do not wish to join a specific RQ 1-4 workstream, we welcome your application. Please provide the information requested below, briefly stating your interest in the Working Group rather than a specific Workstream and send to admin@salivaryglandcancer.uk.
If you would like to join the working group and/or specifically one of the workstreams, please provide the following to admin@salivaryglandcancer.uk.
Please note: The next one day workshop on Friday 9th May 2025 in Sheffield.

In preparation for the UK-wide launch of TRACHES, a digital toolkit designed to support patients and healthcare professionals in delivering safe, high-quality tracheostomy care, we would greatly appreciate your assistance in sharing the event booking link with members and colleagues.
https://icst.org.uk/events/the-uk-traches-launch-event-transforming-tracheostomy-care/
This event, hosted by the National Tracheostomy Safety Project, is aimed at anyone involved in the care of patients with tracheostomies. It offers a unique opportunity for our multidisciplinary teams to come together, discuss key aspects of tracheostomy management in hospitals and in the communities, and explore ways to improve patient outcomes across the UK.
If you have any questions, please get in touch with Laura from ICST laura.wallis@icst.org.uk, who helped develop the toolkit and is organising this event.
Please note this is a separate event to the consensus meeting being held to discuss the principles of care document for adults living in the community with a tracheostomy.
Atlas of health variation in H&N has now been published and is available here: Atlas of health variation in head and neck cancer in England which includes the full report, interactive atlas, data file and meta-data.
The atlas describes geographical variation and inequalities in head and neck cancer incidence, mortality, late-stage diagnosis and routes to diagnosis by ICB. It also provides recommendations and options for action (page 121) for commissioners, policy makers and researchers.
